How Can I Consciously Disarm In A Conversation? | 6/10/21

Spent time today after I got back from work / Barnes & Noble doing podcast prep for the longer term. Solidified the types of questions I want to be asking the guests and created the template in Notion with them. Then spent some time searching for potential intro and outro music. I've narrowed it down to a couple of options, with a favorite. So I'll edit it into the next podcast I've yet to publish to see how it sounds. I want the least amount of overhead per episode once I choose one so we'll test them out. Trying to pick out music that suits me as a person and the content that I'm putting out. Trying to find that right balance between that and being catchy in a podcast setting. No rush or pressure though. Iterate through.

Listening to Jay Shetty podcast last month and they were talking about being able to disarm in the conversation to get to deeper levels with the other person. People do it naturally and unconsciously all the time. How do I di it now in 1 on 1 settings? How can I do it on the podcast consciously with my guests? I think one thing I do now is use silence to disarm. I'll give myself some time to think and leave some empty time in there. That gives the other person permission to stop and think about the topic as well whenever there is a natural pause in the conversation. I think I also allow enough time for them to respond by collecting their thoughts. Making eye contact with them intentionally also allows them to trust me more and vice versa. An obvious one I can do more of is open up about myself about things that show vulnerability to my conversation partner or even an idea I've previously reflected on deeply. Something I'm planning on including at the beginning of each of the podcast episodes with the guests is 3 deep breaths and the ability for them to express something or someone that they're grateful for. I can go as well so it doesn't seem like it's one-sided with that too to help disarm the guest. I want that wall that might be put up to be torn down, at least for the duration of the podcast episode. I want to make them comfortable in potentially uncomfortable positions. Looking forward to when all that can start though once I'm done with my current series.
