How Do I Alter People's Assumptions? | 6/28/21

This weekend was pretty productive I'd say. Created a good amount of energy. Lots of editing and publishing on Saturday and then working on recurring tasks on Sunday.

Started a MasterClass with Chris Voss on the Art of Negotiation. After a few videos in though, I've realized it's actually a class on empathy, listening, and collaboration. It's focused on mirroring and labeling so far and it seems to work splendidly when he does it. I'm gonna employ it as much as I can as I've made it my focus for effective communication in my 6 Time book. Let's see how it goes.

Other thing I started was Wooden, the book about John Wooden that Tripp gave me. Reading the 1st chapter and it feels very similarly to Meditations. Lots of his life's observations and teachings distilled down into short sections in the chapter, just 1-2 paragraphs each on a specific topic. Nothing mind-blowing in there, and I didn't really expect anything like that. He's a simple man. What I've learned so far from it is that if you do the small things well, consistently, you'll inevitably achieve big things. From a values perspective, also very straightforward of being loving, truthful, disciplined, compassionate. He did have 6 great questions in there as well, all of which I've noted down in my NoteWordy database. Much easier and quicker read than Meditations though.

How do I alter people's assumptions? Let's say they've grown up in an environment where they're not exposed to much diversity in race, religion, class, thought, etc. What they're exposed to is all they'll every know. Until they experience something different. How do I bring people, specifically children, together from all these walks of life? Idk the exact answer at the moment, since that would be a big motivating factor and value of the ultimate business model. However, everyone consumes media that has their voice represented. (Btw, that itself is an assumption but I think it's ok to go with that for now.) So what if I created some form of content that's distributed on any social or traditional media that has all these voices represented? This would be a continuation of the policy tv show idea for which I had put together a brainstorm doc 1st draft. Maybe that's what I start focusing on in Q3 - laying the foundation for that. It would be a natural evolution from the content that I'm already publishing and it also brings in more voices. Long-term, this could also be a crucial building block of how we can reimagine the government. But let's not get ahead of myself here. Tangential to having their voice represented and actually even deeper is having their heard. That comes from asking (the right) questions and listening empathetically. This Chris Voss MasterClass will be instrumental in helping me develop those skills. But of course I need to practice that personally and professionally. BY having those 2 things of having their voice heard and voice represented, I think people will be much more likely to listen to others who also want their voice heard and represented. If I can facilitate that, then I think they'd be more likely to be open to questioning their assumptions, which is a crucial step on that journey.
