Meditations Introduction | 4/16/21

Writing this on Thursday itself. Launched our New 2U email and accompanying blog post that has a lot of information for customers on it. Worked / working through some email formatting issues.

Leaning into reading and writing more in public places to be inspired by people and nature while being relaxed enjoying essentially perfect weather.

Checked out some places on Thursday, 5 to be exact. I liked 2-3 of them but the combination of price, location, safety, look and feel, amenities, and management made one stand out. So told my dad real quick and went ahead and sent in the application. So let's hope I get it! I'd have a move-in date of April 26th so I can start moving things in that Monday gradually over the course of the week and finishing that process by the weekend, which coincides with the end of the month. I'm excited to get my own place and go deeper within, with relatively few distractions at home. I would have to buy all the furniture but shouldn't be too much as I'm pretty low key. I want to make a sick workspace area though in the living room. I might have been able to do it in the dining room area if I'd gotten the slightly larger floor plan but didn't think the extra cost justified the use of it. Slowly upgrade to that vision though!

Finally finished the Introduction to Meditations, where it outlined his themes and overall philosophy, the fundamentals of Stoicism and other philosophies in that era and even dissections of his phrases and passages. I'm looking forward to digging into the book and reed his (translated) words. Already some good insights just in the intro. I really resonate with the idea that virtues and leading fully virtuous life can then lead to a fulfilled and happy life. Basically in line with the belief that intentions are the most important thing. If we can break down everything to its virtues / ethics / intentions, we can see who we truly are. Our emotions and desires are really just results of beliefs. If we can change those beliefs, then we can control the emotions and desires that happen naturally. Stoics, from what I understand, push you to not really give into those. But I, personally, think it's fine to have those desires. Just in control and to the benefit of yourself (selflessly) and of others. Directing and intending those desires are what's important. I can have a desire to positively impact my community - definitely don't need to quell or suppress that. The other question he seems to ask frequently is "providence or atoms?" alluding the the seemingly competing ideas of "is it God's creation?" or "is it the physical world?" Just consuming enough content, I know that it's both. God / the Creator / Universal Consciousness created all the energy and physical laws that science is trying to discover. Even recently listening to the video of Episode 4 of the Kathopinashad series, he says rishis discovered this fundamental truth thousands of years ago just by connecting with their true self. Through...Meditations :)

I also haven't meditated in the last couple of days and I can feel a bit less fresh when I wake up. Let's see how my habits continue to impact my overall mindset, heartset, headset, and soulset (as used by Robin Sharma).

I do also feel myself not being as conscious with my leadership presence or body posture / comportment after it being a few days removed from reading the Leadership Dojo. As long as I have on takeaway from it, I'll be content. And rn, there are few that I'm trying to build into my muscle so it'll take time. Just can't put pressure on myself.
