Thoughts & Prayers | 4/20/21

Just a routine Monday yesterday, nothing special. No real action items completed personally but just keeping up with most of my habits.

As I was meditating yesterday evening, there was a lot of commotion in the house, especially surrounding Cole. He was extremely energetic, yelling, running around, boisterously shutting doors, fake crying, sometimes being petulant. Instead of trying harder to focus on my breath, I just relaxed and tried to observe the situation with my energy. When he was crying I intentionally and wholeheartedly gave my empathy and compassion to him and them. After a min or so, it abated and I started my full meditation practice. This connected with a thought I had while at Lake Norman the other day. Do I give my energy to others who need it even though I know it may affect me a bit? The obvious answer is yes. I see it as a battery - I'm usually fully charged or at least 80-90% throughout the day every day. If someone's energy (not just physical energy, but almost an energy that can only be experienced, not described) needs a boost, and I'm in a position to do that, then I see it as my dharma in that moment to provide some sort of my energy.

This is really what the western world thinks of as thoughts and prayers. It's really just you emanating energy into a situation. And done with 100% positive intentions, it can have substantial impact. It becomes a catalyst for physical change, but you can't have one without the other. I understand and can empathize when people say "Screw your thoughts and prayers, we need action!" after a tragedy. We need both thoughts and prayers (done selflessly and with pure love) AND action. Not just one or the other.
