Why do I believe that my career should be a place of expectancy and not expectations?
So I had initially written it as expectations of results and expectancy of effort.
But I think there’s a modification there.
[See pic for 2x2 quadrant]
Expectations x Effort: Serves us
Expectations x Results: Doesn’t serve us
Expectancy x Effort: Doesn’t serve us
Expectancy x Results: Serves us
Without an expectation of effort, there can’t be an expectancy of results. Or a reasonable expectancy. Do we need a more precise word / verb than expect? Because that’s the root word of both of these nouns, but they mean vastly different things.
How do I quantify expectations and expectancy? What is an expectation?
Hmm, the difference between the two is time. Expectation implies that there is a present and a future. Expectancy doesn’t imply time. It’s implying that it’s already happened.
Hmm, even intentions have to have nuance. There is intention setting as an activity of the mind. But then there is intention setting as an activity of the heart and soul. This mindfulness movement - I get it and I think it’s necessary but it’s not the ultimate goal. Going from the transition from body to mind to soul.
If we do have expectations, then they should only be ones that are in the ‘present.’ No expectations about the future.
Hmm, expectations are phrased as thinking something will happen. Vs expectancy is knowing, not with your mind but with your heart, that something will happen.
It’s more of a feeling. Expectancy is a feeling of something happening. It’s not “it will be true”, it’s “it’s already true.” It’s a truism. It’s true by definition. It’s true inherently. “It’s true.” “It is.”
Hmm, even belief is also an interesting word. There is belief in the context of the “what” or the nodes on my Belief Tree. But I’m talking here about belief in the context of how strongly or with how much conviction someone believes something. Like does so much belief actually not serve us? It feels like work having so much belief. “I believe so strongly in myself.” “My belief is getting stronger.” “I have to increase my belief.”
Expectancy to expectations of results are a function of how much the mind is involved. If you feel expectancy and the mind doesn’t think about it afterwards, then that’s the truest form of expectancy. But as the mind starts thinking about the result, then it morphs into expectation of results. So it becomes less and less likely it’s going to happen.
So that may work on an individual level. But what about in systems?
[See graphs]
Systemic intuition. Systemic expectancy. How does that work? If you have everyone going on feeling, how do you plan anything as an organization or even an individual?
Side note - balance is 0-state. We created something which became 1 and more, so we felt imbalance from there.
What if we viewed action items as intentions? Hmm, action or task management is just an expectation management. Which I’m not sure I’m a fan of. Because it’s implying that it’s not done and has to be done. Implying a time construct in there. A difference between now and later. Present and future.
But what if we phrased it as an expectancy? The least effective let’s say is “Subject”, or “This.” Then is “Verb subject”, like “Complete this.” Then it’s “subject verbed”, like “This is completed” or “Completed this.”
What’s the next level? Let’s use examples. “$20k marketing plan” → “Finalize $20k marketing plan” → “$20k marketing plan finalized” → “Franchisee using $20k marketing plan.” This last way of phrasing it implies it is already completed and in action.
This is basically the affirmation setting phrasing. “I am now using the $20k marketing plan.”
What if we took it up another level to the Lofty Question level? “Why is the $20k marketing plan so effective for franchisees?”
What about what would be subtasks underneath that? Can I phrase it like that as well? “Why is each channel chosen so intentionally?” “Why is the structure to strategize and execute so flawless?” “Why is the communication plan to ensure alignment world-class?”
Since different people may resonate with different phrasings of “I am...” affirmations vs “Why am I...?” lofty questions, it’s up to each person to phrase it however they wish.
[Rough Sketch of Vision Pyramid in a lofty question structure]
PMV - Why do we save time with so much ease? Why are we the 1st nationally recognizable brand in laundry and dry cleaning? What do we operate with the values of Accountability, Community, and Excellence?
Objectives - Why is $X revenue so easy to generate?
Key Results - Why are reviews increasing 20% MoM?
KPIs - What is our reviews growth?
Initiatives - Why is the $20k marketing plan so effective?
Action Items - Why is the communication plan world-class?
Everything can be phrased as lofty questions here. Even the most granular of actions. But by doing that, we put ourselves in a state of it already being true. Then having expectancy sessions in the morning or weekly will allow us to be aligned and move towards them with ease.
I think there’s some more flushing out to do here, but this is a solid start.
LOL to answer the original question: because “it is.” :)
